Opera supertitles have been around since the 1980’s and have become the standard in most presentations. The benefits of providing real-time translations is obvious, and expecting your audience to come with the libretto fully read and understood simply isn’t the way it is done anymore.
Most opera companies cannot afford the expensive systems that incorporate screens into the back of seats, so the most common solution is to project them above the stage (supertitles) or at the bottom of video presentations (subtitles). Some houses have procured LED panel displays, and this technology is becoming more and more accessible for a lower cost.
No matter the size or budget of your organization, opera supertitles are a crucial part of the audience experience. If they’re not emotionally invested in what is happening on stage, they’re not going to be as invested in your organization. That can have a profound effect on your development efforts. Make sure you’re providing supertitles for your presentations, whether they are a staged or in a concert setting!
